Bauer (Ire) Misses The Melbourne Cup By A Hair’s Breadth

In one of the closest photo-finish decisions in Melbourne Cup history, the Luca Cumani-trained Bauer (Ire) finished second in the G1 Emirates Melbourne Cup, 3200m, at Flemington on 4 November.

This outstanding performance came on top of Bauer’s victory in the G3 Geelong Cup, 2400m, at his Australian debut in October.

These performances put into focus the potential of the young Kia-Ora Stud broodmare Diamantina (Fr).

Bauer (Ire), by Halling, is out of Dali's Grey (by Linamix), a three-quarter sister in blood to Diamantina, a now six-year-old mare imported by Kia-Ora Stud in 2007 carrying to the impressive young English sire Oasis Dream.

The resultant foal, a filly, is a current yearling and in 2008 Diamantina has produced a colt by the 'hot' Kia-Ora bred sire Exceed and Excel and has been bred back to Fastnet Rock.

Diamantina ( by Linamix-Diamond Seal by Persian Bold), who carries unusual double strains of Relko and Grey Sovereign, is a sister or half-sister to six French stakes performers including the Group winners Diamond Mix (a full brother), Diasilixa (a full sister) and Diamond Dance (dam of Gr2 winner Diamond Tango). Her stakes-placed half-sister Diamonaka has bred three Group winners and is the grandam of Bauer.
