Kia-Ora Yearling 2nd Highest Price in Session at Deauville Sunday, 16th August 2009
Certainly conspicuous by its rarity at the recent
Deauville Yearling Sale was an eye-catching bay colt, bred to northern hemisphere time, by flagship Arrowfield Stud stallion
Redoute’s Choice.
The high-quality, athletic-looking son of Australia’s former champion sire was consigned by Haras d’Etreham on behalf of Kia Ora, the Hunter Valley nursery having produced the colt out of well-related
Kingmambo mare
Mambo in Freeport, a half-sister to US Group One winner
Point Ashley and US Group Two winner
Raw Gold.
Bred on the same sire-line cross that produced dual Australian Group One winner
Gallica, the Redoute’s Choice colt certainly found favour with both onlookers and buyers at Deauville.
“He’s a lovely colt,” commented noted bloodstock agent and frequent Australian visitor
Hubie de Burgh, “a strong, athletic, well-balanced individual with a very good action.”
And he found even further favour with
Sheikh Hamdan’s racing manager
Angus Gold, who bid E280,000 (
Aus$475,000) to secure the son of Redoute’s Choice for
Shadwell France. At more than double the average and nearly three times the median, this made him the sale-session’s second-highest-priced yearling and equal-top-priced colt.
“We’ve had a bit of luck with the sire in Australia,” Gold told
racingpost.com “as we won the Group One Blue Diamond Stakes with a son of his in Nadeem. I thought this was a bonny little horse with a good walk and he should make a two-year-old.”

Bob Rose, a principle advisor to the Kia Ora Group, expressed delight at the Deauville result, at the same time emphasising Kia Ora’s intention of re-building its name.
“We are thrilled not only that our Redoute’s Choice
colt sold so well at Deauville, but also that he went to the right buyer in Sheikh Hamdan, who has been so strong a supporter of Australian racing and breeding over the past two decades.” said Mr Rose.
“We’re also pleased to have been able to showcase internationally so attractive a son of Redoute’s Choice, out of a well-related American-bred mare. Kia Ora previously bred Exceed and Excel on this self-same pattern – that of Danehill blood crossed with a high-class American mare – and we do believe that there can be demand internationally for Australian-sired yearlings conceived to northern hemisphere time.
