Anchor Bolt Eyes Spring Group 1 Wednesday, 15th July 2009
Kia Ora Stud-bred two-year-old colt
Anchor Bolt
(Anabaa (
USA)-Chris Penrod (
USA), by
Theatrical) looks an exciting prospect for the coming season.
After placing at his first two starts and warmly fancied to win,
Anchor Bolt came off a 31-day break to triumph over 1600m at Warwick Farm on 14 July.
He continued the recent domination of
Sydney juvenile racing by expatriate South African trainer David Payne who bought the colt at the 2008 Sydney Easter Yearling Sale for $400,000 on behalf of South African furniture mogul Marcus Jooste.
Completing the South African connection was the colt’s jockey, Glyn Schofield.
David Payne said the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes, 2000m, at
Randwick in October was the main goal for the giant colt.
"He's going to be a very nice three-year-old but he's just a baby at the moment and doesn't know what he's doing," Payne said.
"He's a 2000 metre horse and we'll give him a go at the Spring Champion.”
Anchor Bolt
is the fifth foal, and third winner, produced by
Chris Penrod (USA), an unraced half-sister to Group 1 Arlington Secretariat Stakes winner Startac.
Their dam is the French stakeswinning daughter of
Mr Prospector,
Tenga.
The next dam is a sister to ill-fated champion
Landaluce.
